U-Haul Growth Index: Vermont climbs to 12, Texas first

Tennessee is third, South Carolina fourth, and Arizona fifth among the fastest growing states.

Growth states are calculated by the net gain of U-Haul Trucks enter a state rather than leave that state in a calendar year. Migration trend data is compiled from the more than 2 million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions that occur each year.

California is 50th and Illinois 49th on the list for the second year in a row, indicating that these states once again saw the largest net losses of one-way U-Haul trucks.

Texas reclaims the No. 1 growth state it held from 2016 to 2018. It ranked second behind Florida in 2019 and Tennessee in 2020.

“We’re seeing strong growth coming from the east and west coasts,” said Matt Merrill, U-Haul district vice president for the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex and West Texas. “A lot of people are moving here from California (and) New York. We also see a lot of people coming from Chicago markets. I think it’s a lot due to job growth – a lot of opportunity here. cost of living here is much lower than these areas. Texas is open for business. “

Indiana, Colorado, Maine, Idaho, and New Mexico round out the top 10 growth states for 2021, as self-entrepreneurs target Southeast, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain regions like prime destinations.

Some Northeastern markets have shown resumes in year-over-year migration, with Maine rising 21 places, Vermont 14 places and Connecticut 25 places in the U-Haul Growth Index. Yet three of the six states with the largest net losses were also in the northeast: New York (45), Massachusetts (47) and Pennsylvania (48).

California remained the top state for emigration, but its net loss of U-Haul trucks was not as severe as in 2020. This can be partially attributed to the fact that U-Haul simply ran out of stock for meet customer demand. outgoing equipment.

Texas’ growth is statewide, although some of its biggest gains have been in the suburbs around the DFW Metroplex. Florida’s gains are equally widespread, with considerable growth south of Orlando and along both coasts.

Overall moving traffic across Texas increased in 2021, as in most states. One-way U-Haul truck arrivals jumped 19% while departures were up 18% from 2020. Arrivals accounted for 50.2% of all U-Haul one-way traffic year-round last in Texas.

“The Texas economy is growing rapidly,” said Kristina Ramos, president of U-Haul Company of South Austin. “With a strong job market and a low cost of living, it’s a given. Texas has no income tax, so families get more for their money.”
