Texas Democrats welcome extension of moratorium on President Biden’s deportations
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement in response to the extension of the federal moratorium on 60-day evictions by the Biden-Harris administration:
“With the most infectious and deadly Delta variant spreading across the country, and with only half of America’s population fully vaccinated, it is imperative to protect millions of Americans from losing their homes. . Since the start of the pandemic, we have experienced an unprecedented level of economic suffering since the Great Depression and it is thanks to our Democratic leaders that we are able to better rebuild and stay safe amid so much uncertainty. .
“The president’s extension of the eviction moratorium for an additional 60 days is directed towards areas with high COVID-19 levels, meaning many Texans won’t have to worry about housing and risking their lives then that they work to get back on their feet. It is a victory for our public health, our economy and for the millions of Americans who are suffering from the lingering effects of this health crisis.
“We are grateful to President Biden and the many Democratic leaders who have worked tirelessly to protect Americans. However, the Supreme Court has signaled that only Congress can extend the moratorium on evictions even further. We therefore urge all members of Congress, not just Democrats, to work to help the public during this time of great need.
“Gov. Abbott and the state legislature must act quickly and release federal funds allocated to our state to reimburse rent for those facing eviction. Texas Republican leaders must put people above their political agendas and immediately get Texans the critical relief they need to survive these difficult times. “
