Texas announces 2020 vote audit after Trump requests review – KXAN Austin
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas election officials said Thursday evening they were checking the 2020 results in four major counties hours after former President Donald Trump, continuing to falsely claim the election was stolen, urged Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for a ballot review.
Trump won Texas last year by 5.5 percentage points, the closest margin of victory to a GOP presidential candidate in decades.
The Texas Secretary of State’s office did not specify what prompted the announcement in an evening press release. Earlier this year, Keith Ingram, the office’s election administrator, said the 2020 Texas election was “safe and secure.”
The counties audited will include the major Democratic strongholds around Houston and Dallas, as well as Tarrant County, which for years was the largest GOP-controlled county in Texas but chose President Joe Biden last year.
“Under existing Texas laws, the Secretary of State has the authority to conduct a full and comprehensive forensic audit of any election and has already started the process in the two largest Democratic counties and the two largest Republican counties. of Texas, “the statement read.
He added that the office expects the legislature to provide funds for the audit. It was not clear who would conduct the review, and an office spokesperson did not return a message Thursday evening.
The secretary of state is appointed by the governor of Texas but has remained vacant since Ruth Ruggero Hughs resigned in May. A spokeswoman for Abbott did not respond to questions about the announcement Thursday evening.
Trump called on Abbott to audit the Texas election in a statement released earlier Thursday, saying “your citizens don’t trust the electoral system.” Trump has falsely claimed to have claimed that electoral fraud and irregularities cost him electoral votes in Arizona, where his supporters hired to examine the 2020 vote count are expected to deliver their findings on Friday.
The other booming Texas county, Collin County, a suburb of Dallas, which picked Trump last year.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Democrat and county chief elected official, was quick to criticize the decision. “Donald Trump ordered Gov. Abbott to audit the 2020 Texas election and, like clockwork, TX has just launched a Harris County voter audit. Democracy is not a game, ”she tweeted.
