In January, Mayor Mattie Parker and other city officials launched a initiative to increase funding for Fort Worth minority-owned businesses, affordable homeownership, rental housing and commercial real estate. The city has committed $3 million to the effort, known as CDFI Friendly Fort Worth.
CDFI Friendly Fort Worth will operate as an intermediary, connecting CDFIs (or Community Development Financial Institutions) with residents, entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations in Fort Worth communities. CDFIs offer flexible capital to fill gaps in underserved communities.
CDFI Friendly Fort Worth expects to see up to $250 million in new CDFI lending over the next five years, more than seven times the amount of CDFI financing Fort Worth has seen in the past 15 years. More than 1,200 CDFIs work in the United States and manage more than $220 billion.
